Lance and I work together at Lauren James so people assume that we see each other ALL of the time but the truth is, most days I don’t even work from the same building as him! We have very different roles at Lauren James so I’m usually with the marketing and design teams while Lance is with the operations team! (his title at LJ is COO which means Chief Operations Officer!) But even though we don’t work together on a day to day basis, we are still the owners of the company together which means we are constantly working on things! So for us, between LJ and being parents to 2 crazy little boys, our days can get pretty jam packed! Lance also spends a lot of time mentoring other entrepreneurs so we usually have to make a pretty solid effort to break away from whatever we have going on and make time for us!
We love going out to eat, so we we like doing lunch dates during the work week where we can have time together. We also have a “no phone” policy during meal times so we can really enjoy our time together. This is a tough one for us because as business owners, we need to be available to our team 100% of the time so we DO sometimes leave out phones on the table but we make it a rule that it’s for emergencies only! It’s become such a habit for us we don’t think about it anymore, but it’s such an easy way to connect with your significant other.
Life gets so chaotic sometimes that you actually have to carve out time with your significant other so below are 4 other great ways to make time for each other when you both have a busy schedule:
- Plan ahead: I know it might seem obvious, but if your schedule starts filling up make sure you coordinate your schedule so you can figure out a time that works for both of you. We always try to plan date nights ahead of time, whether its meeting for lunch, catching a movie together, or a dinner date. Planning ahead also gives you something to look forward to and a chance to dress up.
- Find something you love to do together: There’s nothing wrong with having your own hobbies, but finding one you can share together is a great away for you both to relax and unwind while spending time together. Date nights don’t always have to include a babysitter and a fancy dinner reservation!
- Plan some casual date nights: We love doing “at home” date nights where we can send the kids up to the playroom with snacks and a movie and then spend a casual evening downstairs together. We will put on our favorite music, cook a fun dinner and crack open a bottle of wine and it’s almost like we are on vacation! Sometimes when you have kids it’s not always easy to coordinate a babysitter and get out of the house so it’s nice to have back up plans to be able to spend time together at home! (parents, can I get an AMEN!?)
- Learn to turn it off: Whether it’s work, school, or whatever responsibilities you have, learn to turn it off every once in awhile. That might mean disconnecting from the world and banning phones, or just setting a work curfew. I know couples who pick a time and totally turn off their phones and computers each night at that exact same time. Unfortunately this doesn’t exactly work for owners of a very fast growing startup company… but we do our best to disconnect when we can!
- Get away: Sometimes taking time off means extra work before and after the trip, but it is so worth it. Plus the time spent planning and leading up to the trip means even more time to spend together and is half the fun. Lance and I try to extend work trips by just 1 day sometimes so we can have a day together in a new city!
